Geminid Meteor Shower
December 14, 2024 2:20 am·Ipswich, Massachusetts
The Geminids, an annual meteor shower originating from 3200 Phaethon, peaked on December 14, 2024. This is a composite I made in Ipswich containing around 50 meteors. I left my camera shooting on an interval for about 4 hours with a “feels like” temperature of 13 F (thankfully I could stay in the car). Out of 1572 frames, 87 contained visible meteors. The other challenge was competing with a near full moon that washed the sky out, but on the upside it helped to illuminate the foreground and made it easy to see outside. The biggest meteor (greenish in frame below Polaris) seemed to burn for over 3 seconds and produced a spectacular color that my camera had difficulty capturing due to the intense brightness.
